The pouch is the last decision in a private-label dried-fruit project and the first thing the shopper sees, which is why it is so often decided late and regretted early. A doypack — the stand-up, gusseted, usually zippered pouch that dominates dried-fruit shelves across Europe — looks simple. Underneath it sit a film structure that decides shelf life, a zipper that decides whether the product is still good a week after opening, a window that trades barrier for visibility, a label panel that has to satisfy EU food-information law, and a size that behaves differently on a shelf than in a courier bag. This guide walks a brand owner or category manager through each of those, and closes with what Arovela handles at the packing stage versus what stays on your side.

Anatomy of a stand-up pouch
Film structure. A doypack is a laminate of two or more layers, each doing a job. Typical roles: an outer print layer (often PET or paper for a natural look), a barrier layer that slows moisture and oxygen (metallised film, aluminium foil, EVOH or a transparent barrier coating), and an inner sealant layer (usually PE or PP) that forms the seals and touches the food. The barrier layer is the one that decides shelf life; the outer layer decides how the pack looks and prints; the sealant decides seal integrity and, increasingly, recyclability.
Zipper. A press-to-close reclosure above the tear line. It matters most for products consumed over days — dried apricots, mixed fruit, powders — and least for single-serve packs. Zipper quality varies: a stiff or misaligned zipper is a leading cause of "went stale after opening" complaints that are actually reclosure failures.
Window. A clear panel showing the product. Shoppers trust visible fruit; the trade-off is that a window is a hole in the barrier layer and a light path to the product. Dark fruit (fig, date, mulberry) tolerates a window better than colour-sensitive fruit (apricot, apple), which is one reason bright, unsulphured apricot is often sold in an opaque pouch or a small window only.
Gusset and stand. The bottom gusset lets the pack stand; the fill weight and product density decide whether it actually stands straight on a shelf or slumps. This is tested with real product, not calculated.
Valve. One-way degassing valves are a coffee feature and are rarely relevant for dried fruit; where they appear it is usually a legacy of a shared packaging line rather than a technical need. Nitrogen flushing or an oxygen absorber sachet is the more relevant oxygen-management tool for fruit.
Tear notch, hang hole, euro slot. Small details that decide whether the pack opens cleanly and hangs on a peg — worth specifying rather than assuming.

Sizes: retail shelf versus e-commerce parcel
Retail packs for dried fruit typically sit in the 100–250 g band for premium and 250–500 g for family or value lines; the shelf decides the footprint, and the retailer's planogram decides the facing height. E-commerce reverses some of the logic: the pack is not seen until it arrives, so shelf presence matters less and parcel behaviour matters more. Larger, flatter packs pack better in a mailer; multipacks and bundles reduce per-order handling; and any hang hole is a liability rather than a feature. Brands selling in both channels often run the same artwork on two formats rather than compromising both.
For an e-commerce launch, the parcel is part of the packaging spec: a pouch that survives a courier network is thicker, has stronger seals, and often lives inside a carton with dividers. Shelf life versus barrier: the trade-off nobody escapes
Dried fruit fails in the pack in two ways: it gains moisture (softens, cakes, and in the worst case allows mould) or it oxidises (colour darkens, flavour flattens, and in nut-and-fruit mixes fat goes rancid). Both are functions of the film's transmission rates for water vapour and oxygen. Higher barrier means longer shelf life and, usually, an opaque, multi-material, more expensive pack; lower barrier means a lighter, clearer, more recyclable pack and a shorter or more conservative best-before. There is no single right answer. What matters is that the best-before you print is supported by stability evidence for that fruit in that pack, not borrowed from a different structure. EU labelling essentials for the pouch
The finished-product label is governed by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on food information to consumers (FIC). The mandatory particulars every dried-fruit pouch on the EU market must carry:
- Name of the food — "dried apricots", not a fantasy name alone.
- List of ingredients, including any coating or flow aid — see the cutting and dicing guide for why that matters.
- Allergens emphasised within the ingredient list. For dried fruit the one that catches brands out is sulphites above 10 mg/kg, which must be declared and typographically emphasised; the labelling detail and the "unsulphured" positioning it enables are covered in our sulphites and sorbates labelling guide. - Net quantity in grams, in the same field of vision as the name.
- Best-before date ("best before" or "best before end", depending on shelf-life length) and, where relevant, storage conditions.
- Business name and address of the EU food business operator responsible for the information.
- Country of origin where required or where its omission would mislead.
- Nutrition declaration in the prescribed format.

Legibility rules set a minimum x-height for mandatory text, which on a small pouch is where artwork designers and legal reviewers usually meet. Language: the language(s) required by the member state where the product is sold, which for multi-country ranges means multi-language back panels or country-specific SKUs. Lot and best-before on the pack
Two practical points. First, the lot code is applied at packing and must match the lot on the CoA and outer carton, so decide early whether you want the lot embedded in the date code or printed separately — it changes the printer setup. Second, "best before" is a quality date, not a safety date, but the number you print is a commitment; base it on stability data for your fruit in your film, and be conservative in the first production run.
Sustainability: mono-material trend and PPWR as context
Two things are shaping dried-fruit packaging in the EU right now, and both are context rather than a rule Arovela sets for you. The mono-material trend — pouches made from a single polymer family (all-PE or all-PP) so they can enter existing recycling streams — is moving quickly in retail, and retailers increasingly ask for it. The trade-off is barrier, discussed above. The practical advice: when you choose a film today, ask the converter for its recyclability assessment and keep the documentation, because your retail customers will ask for it.

FAQ
Do you supply the pouches or do we?
Either. We can propose pouch structures with their barrier and recyclability trade-offs, or fill into film you specify from your incumbent converter. Artwork is always yours; print can be arranged either way.
What minimum order applies to doypack-packed dried fruit?
It depends on the fruit, the format inside the pouch, the pouch structure and whether the pouch is stock or custom-printed. Custom-printed film has its own converter minimum, which is usually the binding constraint on a first run. State fruit, pack size, target volume and delivery country in your inquiry and the quote will carry a concrete minimum and lead time.
Can we have a window and a long shelf life?
You can have both, with limits. A small window in a high-barrier pouch costs a little shelf life; a large window on colour-sensitive fruit costs a lot of colour. We would rather show you the stability trade-off on your fruit than promise a number in the abstract.
Is the sulphite allergen declaration our responsibility or yours?
The label content is the brand owner's legal responsibility. What we do is give you the analytical basis: the CoA for the fruit tells you whether sulphites are present and at what level, which determines whether the emphasised declaration is required. For unsulphured fruit the answer is usually simpler, and it is one reason clean-label ranges favour it.
